Joseph P. Tavares, 84, of Bristol

Joseph P. Tavares, 84, of Bristol passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Jan. 26, 2018. He was the husband of the late Maria Piedale (Costa) Tavares.   

Born in Furnas, Sao Miguel, Portugal, he was the son of the late Augustina and Jose Pacheco. He is survived by his children, Maria Mercurio and her husband Bal, Joseph Tavares and his wife Nancy, Doris Hayes and her husband Kevin, Walter Tavares and Isabel Sousa and her husband EJ, and his beloved grandchildren Tara (Marc) Buontempo, Eric Tavares, Nicholas Hayes, Nathan Hayes, Justin Tavares, Alexa Tavares, Jordan Sousa, Madison Sousa, Julia Sousa and the late Michael J. Mercurio.  He was the great-grandfather of Michael Anthony Buontempo and brother of Natalia Goncalves and the late Octavio Pacheco, Maria Melo, Mary Jo Pacheco and Manuel Pacheco. He also leaves behind his brothers and sisters-in-law, as well as many nieces and nephews. 

Mr. Tavares was a retired member of Carpenters Local Union 94 of RI. He enjoyed cooking for his children and family, gardening and fishing at his vacation home in New Hampshire and spent his free time watching sports, especially hockey. He was a member of St. Elizabeth's Church, Holy Ghost Committee and Santo Cristo Committee.

His funeral services were held Jan. 31 from the George Lima Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by the Rev. Richard A. Narciso at St. Elizabeth's Church.

The liturgical readings were by Lucy Scott and Liz Danielson. The Prayer of the Faithful was read by Cindy Hoyt. The offertory gifts were presented by Tara Buontempo, Madison Sousa, Julia Sousa and Alexa Tavares. Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery. 

Serving as pallbearers were Eric Tavares, Jordan Sousa, Nicholas Hayes, Nathan Hayes, Marc Buontempo and Mario Canario.

Memorial donations may be made to: Michael J. Mercurio Scholarship Fund, 46 Broad Street  Warren RI 02885 or St. Elizabeth's Church.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
