Joyce C. (Burnside) Cranshaw, 86, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2017 in The Villages, Fla. She was the beloved wife of Richard C. Cranshaw Jr. and a longtime Bristol resident. Born on April 13, 1931, she was the daughter of Leroy and Helen Burnside of Providence.

Joyce attended The Wheeler School in Providence and went on to earn an A.A. degree at Dean Junior College in Franklin, Mass. Joyce led an active life. She was very involved in sailing, with both the Edgewood and Bristol Yacht Clubs. Joyce enjoyed cooking, skiing and reading, and experienced many fun-filled adventures to California and beyond.

Joyce will be deeply missed by her daughter, Robin Darcy (husband Bob); her son, Donald Cranshaw (wife Elise); her grandchildren, Kyle Crowley (wife Katie), Kate Rowe (husband Chris), Hollis Crowley, Taylor Crowley and Sam Crowley; and her great grandchildren, Makenzie Crowley, Olivia Crowley and Jack Rowe. Her loving spirit will live on in all of us who loved and cared for her.

A service will be held on Aug. 4, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Swan Point Historic Chapel in Providence. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in her name to the National Hospice Foundation.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
