Parents who aren't sure what their children are doing on their plethora of devices (or what's happening to them on those devices) will want to spend some time at Colt Elementary School in Bristol Wednesday night, May 6.

A panel of experts will talk about how parents can monitor their children's social media use and digital footprints.

"Take Charge of Your Child's Digital Life" begins at 6 p.m. in the Colt School auditorium. The school is at 570 Hope St. in downtown Bristol. The program is free.

According to a 2014 research study by Cox Communications, more than half of teens (ages 13 to 17) have witnessed bullying online, and 24 percent have been the victims of bullying. It can happen on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube or through online video game platforms.

Wednesday night's featured speaker is Dr. Larry Filippelli, assistant superintendent of schools in Scituate. Dr. Filippelli has served on the Rhode Island Senate Special Commission on Cyberbullying, Cyberthreats and Sexting and is widely recognized as the statewide expert on cyberbullying, sexting, and social media.

Joining him for a panel discussion are:

• Marc Remington, Bristol police officer and member of the Rhode Island Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, as Assigned by the Rhode Island State Police;

• JoAnne Waite, licensed marriage and family therapist and Rockwell School parent;

• Keith Medeiros, Mt. Hope High School’s resource officer; and

• Jennifer Little, Kickemuit Middle School parent and media consultant.

The program is hosted and presented by the Bristol Warren Regional School District Wellness Committee.
