Lady Huskies lose to Cumberland, 3-2, in D-I soccer semifinals

The Mt. Hope girls soccer team lost to Cumberland, 3-2, in the Division I semifinals at Johnston High School on Thursday night.

Cumberland started fast and dominated offensively as Sarah Marsland, Jaylynne Thomas and Emma Tziachris scored for the Skippers as they took an early 3-0 lead. Two of the shots flew high over the head of freshman goalkeeper Thea Brum. "We came out flat in the first half," said Huskies head coach Kelly Ferreira. Midway through the first half, the Huskies defense finally steadied and the team was able to muster some offense. Freshman forward Tess Mckenzie nearly scored late in the first half when she came crashing in towards Skippers goalkeeper Mikayla Bowerfind while running after a lobbed pass. Racing towards the ball, Bowerfind was able to grab the ball before Mckenzie could tip it by her.

At halftime, down 3-0, coach Ferreira rallied the players and made some adjustments. She spoke to the team as they rested and hydrated in a circle off to the side of the field. "Girls your an amazing team. You have been doing well all season. You can score three or four goals in a half and you need to leave

everything you have on the field. You have to want it and go and get it," she said.

Coach Ferreira inserted senior goalkeeper Sam Eddy and made a few adjustments to handle the Skippers offense. "All season our identify has been to switch up our goalkeepers. They are both talented and we went with our gut and started our freshman in the first half. Then in the second half, down 3-0, we needed our senior captain back in there. She played a phenomenal game," coach Ferreira said.

Seconds into the first half, Mt. Hope freshman midfielder Madisyn Pacheco booted a shot past Bowerfind to make it 3-1. Eddy and

the revived Huskies defense shut down the Skippers and pushed the ball up through the outside and let their speedy forwards take it to the goal. Midway through the second half, Huskies junior striker Michaela Goglia did just that. After collecting a long pass near midfield, Goglia blazed between two defenders and blasted a shot by Bowerfind to make it 3-2. Goglia who was fourth in the league in scoring with 27 goals and 4 assists in 17 games, had

several chances to tie the game for Mt. Hope. She hit a header just by the right goal post off a corner kick and came crashing in and bowled over Bowerfind landing inside the goal on another corner.

"All year we have been a second half team. But that was the best half of soccer that I had seen my team play all year. We had our chances in the second half to tie it up. Our hats off to Cumberland. They have a great team. We wish them luck in the championship," said coach Ferreira.

Stats: Eddy and Brum combined for 5 saves. For the season, Eddy had 54 saves and 8 goals against in 10 games. Brum had 67 saves and 13 goals against in 12 games. Goglia scored 27 goals and 4 assists. Sophomore forward Olivia Medeiros scored 10 goals and 4 assists. Freshman forward Tess Mckenzie had 7 goals and 11 assists. The Lady Huskies ended the season with a 13-4-1 record overall.
