The Portsmouth girls basketball team held on to beat North

Kingstown, 42-35, at Portsmouth High School on Friday night. Senior captain Haley Alves led the way scoring 17 points for the Patriots. Junior guard Gabriella DeComo scored 15 and freshman center Kylie Swider netted 7. Swider was a force in the paint as the Patriots defense stifled the Skippers through much of the game. North Kingstown mounted their comeback when Swider got into foul trouble midway through the second half. But DeComo and Alves each downed a pair of foul shots for a 4 point swing late in the second half that put the Patriots over the top.
