Land trusts clearing trails along Warren's Palmer River

Parcel among those donated to trust by Town of Warren

The Warren Land Conservation Trust has started clearing walking trails along 55 acres on the Palmer River that it recently received from the Town of Warren. The Haile Farm Preserve is named after the circa 1692 farmstead once located there. It is paired with an additional five acres previously acquired by the land trust, bringing the total preserve to roughly 60 acres.

Volunteers spent several hours there this weekend as they started on the trails, and the plan is for the first 1.1 miles of trails to be open to the public in the spring or summer of 2019. Ultimately, the trust plans to improve more than two miles of trails, including marsh and forest habitat areas, and views of osprey nests and the Palmer River. The Haile Farm’s primary trail will be named for Dick Hallberg, who was a driving force for the land trust over many years.

Volunteers are needed to help clear parts of the proposed trails in the coming months, and those with carpentry experience are needed to help build boardwalks along the wetter parts of the trails. Those who can help should send an e-mail to warrenlctri@gmail.com. A rendering of the proposed trails will be unveiled at the trust's annual meeting, scheduled for 8:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9 at Hope & Main on Main Street.
