The East Bay girls' hockey team pushed LaSalle Academy to overtime in the first game of the Division One finals before losing 4-3 at Brown University on Monday night, March 21.
East Bay — which includes players from Barrington, Mt. Hope and Portsmouth high schools — fell behind 1-0 at the start of the second period, but bounced back to take a 2-1 lead heading into the final period.
Mary Arkins scored off an assist from Carissa Rego on a power-play goal to open East Bay's scoring. Claudia Kriz gave East Bay the lead on her unassisted goal at the 13:33 mark of the second period.
LaSalle battled back with the next two goals, and held a 3-2 edge until 8:54 in the third period when Madelyn Cox scored off an assist from Allison Kelsey.
The score remained knotted at 3-3 through the end of regulation, but in the overtime period, LaSalle's Arianna Boscia found the back of the Barrington net.
Erika Keller finished the game with 21 saves in goal for East Bay.
The Barrington, Mt. Hope, Portsmouth co-op team was a late entry into the Division One finals.
The Eagles dropped two straight games against the Warwick co-op team in the semifinals — 3-1 in the first game, and 3-0 in the second.
But late last week it was announced that Warwick school officials had informed the Rhode Island Interscholastic League that the Warwick co-op team had been allowing an academically ineligible player to participate in games. The ineligible player — it was not clear who had been ineligible — had played in the semifinal series against East Bay. The league ruled that East Bay would play in the finals, since it was the last team to be defeated by Warwick and because it had the best regular season record.
The finals had been slated to start on Friday night, but league officials postponed the first game to Monday night.
Game two of the finals series was set for Tuesday night, at Brown University at 6 p.m.
