Last-second comeback falls short for Junior Pee Wees

'Hail Mary' pass tipped away, Barrington loses 13-6

The Barrington Pop Warner Junior Pee Wees battled back from a 13-0 deficit in the fourth quarter to nearly tie the game on the last play from scrimmage.

Unfortunately for the Eagle-faithful, the last-second "Hail Mary" pass was knocked away, and Barrington fell 13-6 to Old Rochester. The loss pushed Barrington's record to 3-3 with two games remaining in the regular season.

Barrington opened the game on defense and eventually stopped the Bulldogs on a key fourth down play. AJ DiOrio made a number of nice tackles, as did Kevin Robinson, Owen Willard, Mitchell Ivatts, Chucky Potter and Kurt Donecker.

Later in the first half, Old Rochester mounted a long-drive and scored on an outside run. The Bulldogs did not convert the extra point, and Barrington trailed 6-0.

With time running down in the second quarter, DiOrio dropped back and lofted a long pass to Ivatts, who hauled in the spiral and then sprinted toward the end zone. The Bulldogs' secondary gave chase and tripped up Ivatts at the 10-yard line. The clock ran out before Barrington could get off another play.

Trailing 6-0 in the second half, Barrington's offense built an impressive drive, pounding the ball inside with hard runs by Willard, Ivatts, Shea Parish and DiOrio. The drive stalled after a holding penalty and a stop by the Bulldogs.

Old Rochester took over possession deep in their own end and broke off a long touchdown run, dropping Barrington into a 13-0 hole.

Despite the score, Barrington continued to work hard. Potter and DiOrio ran the ball hard and with about three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, DiOrio followed the blocks of Ryan Rigamonti, Nate Reid, Lyam Renaud, Robinson, Aimon Bickford, Charly Potter and Jacob Raposa into the end zone. The extra point conversion failed and Barrington trailed 13-6.

Without any timeouts and needing the ball back, Barrington's defense went to work stopping Old Rochester's offense. The Eagles made one key stop after another and on fourth down, DiOrio tracked down the Bulldogs' quarterback for a five-yard loss.

Barrington's offense took over possession at the Old Rochester 30-yard line with four seconds left on the clock. Ivatts took the snap from Rigamonti, dropped back and lofted a high spiral toward DiOrio in the corner of the end zone. DiOrio jumped, hands reaching for the ball, but the pass was tipped away at the last second by a pair of Old Rochester defenders.

Barrington will travel to New Bedford on Saturday for a game at 3 p.m.
