Rock Singewald loves to row, and he tries to get out on the Warren River every day. It keeps him healthy and helps him feel connected to Warren’s beautiful waterfront and proud maritime history.

“Plus it’s cheaper than therapy,” said Mr. Singewald, a member of the Warren Harbor Management Commission and Warren’s chapter of the Traditional Small Craft Association.

Next Saturday, June 3, Mr. Singewald and his friends in the association will spread their love of small craft rowing when they hold a three-hour “Learn to Row” day at the Warren Town Beach. The event is open to all who are interested in learning to row, or who just want to see Warren from a completely different perspective.

“For me it’s very Zen-like when you are out there,” he said. “And it’s great exercise. It keeps me healthy and it’s a fun thing especially in a town like Warren that has this great maritime history. Having some traditional boats on the waterfront is a nice nod to the traditions of the town.”

Association members will have a large collection of small dinghies and rowboats on hand, as well as a larger six-oared “gig” that they row on a regular basis. Everyone is welcome to come out and give it a go, though Mr. Singewald said there are some practical considerations — youngsters can go out as long as they’re large enough to be able to handle a boat, and their parents must be with them. All safety equipment, including lifejackets, will be provided and there will be fire, police and rescue members on hand to keep things safe. The event is insured and has the blessing of the Warren Town Council, harbor management commission, town manager and parks and recreation department, he said.

Though the Warren chapter is starting small this year, Mr. Singewald’s hope is that eventually the ‘Learn to Row Day’ will morph into something larger; perhaps a broader celebration of Warren’s waterfront and maritime history.

“We’re hoping we get a crowd,” he said. “We’ve sent info to the middle school and the high school, and we’re really trying to get the word out.”

“It’ll be fun, especially for people who haven’t been out (on the river). You get this fabulous view of the waterfront and the Warren skyline. It’s really beautiful.”

Learn to Row Day runs from 9 a.m. to noon next Saturday, June 3, at the Warren Town Beach.
