Why are clam-flavored doughnut holes beloved in Southern New England and almost nowhere else on the planet? Clam cakes' history hold the key to this mystery. "Great Clam Cake and Fritter Guide" author Carolyn Wyman will explain in a 45-minute illustrated presentation based on her new clam cake history, cookbook and travel guidebook at the Barrington Public Library on Thursday, Aug. 10, at 6:30 p.m.

Wyman will also talk about the stories behind current East Bay clam cake destinations like Flo’s, Blount’s and Evelyn’s. A book signing will follow the talk. Admission is free but reservations are required and can be made at www.barringtonlibrary.org or by calling 401-247-1920.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
