Letter: A solution to the flag turmoil in Barrington

Posted

To the editor:

The flagpole turmoil continues and one really cannot grasp how to satisfy all the concerns for personal causes the need to promote one over another. I present a proposal to the leadership at the Town Hall with a solution that should help to resolve the issues and satisfy all parties with the outcome.

First, I believe that the town leadership should honor the commitment to fly the American flag at its current site to honor all veterans and the sacrifices they made for Barrington and our country.

My proposal is to erect a “Freedom Pole,” a pole for expression of freedom through flags. This “Freedom Pole” should be erected at the Police Cove. Since the council has indicated that applications could be submitted to them for approval to fly various flags of expressions, this would offer an individual and groups the opportunity to display a flag without treading on others and would eliminate this continuous debate.

I further believe that the Police Cove provides an excellent location for the “Freedom Pole” both in name and location. It is an excellent location for viewing flags, and it affords an individual or group the opportunity for freedom of expression through flags.

Thanks for consideration of my throughs on this turmoil.
