To the editor:
I have had the honor over the last decade to represent Barrington and the Riverside section of East Providence (District 66) as their State Representative in the General Assembly. It has been a privilege. I am writing today to let my friends in District 66 know that I will not be running for re-election.
Having been elected five times, serving 10 years in the legislature I believe that as a supporter of term limits, it is time to practice what I preach.
Over the 10 years I have served in the General Assembly, I have had the great fortune to be involved in a number of momentous legislative initiatives: marriage equality, the institution of a statewide education funding formula, major tax reform and championing a good government agenda. It was the Barrington bridges and their long overdue schedule and budget overruns that got me to run and I was delighted to see completion of the White Church Bridge on time and on budget. Government can work.
Through the years I have had the great pleasure of getting to know so many constituents. I have had the gift of their confidence in handling difficult issues for them and the fun of celebrating a myriad of joyous occasions. The people make the job delightful.
Over these past 10 years my husband Frank and children Sam and Hannah have been by my side and I could not have run as effectively or served as responsibly without their wonderful love and support. To my family and friends I thank you.
So I am going to enjoy this last legislative session, continuing to work on issues affecting District 66. I plan to stay in the wonderful town of Barrington and look forward to new and exciting prospects down the road. I want to thank the voters of District 66 for placing their trust in me. It has been a wonderful job.
Sincerely,
Joy Hearn
