Letter: America is a dream worth defending

Posted

This is written in response to the letter by Gerald Nutini, “In defense of true patriotism.”

“American is an idea.” Nothing could be further from the truth. America is a dream; a dream that took cultivation. Our founders agreed behind closed doors, according to David McCullough, that the inequalities needed to be fixed. But we would never get to this point without being allowed to start the country.

I hate to sound like a CIA agent from the 1980s, but necessary evils took place so that we could come to this point, which is not perfect but we’re getting there. Furthermore, my favorite uncle is a cop. It’s a hard job which requires a lot of men and women to make judgement calls on the spot; and it is low pay.

I think maybe we should be thanking police officers who are willing to do it and have more appreciation for the Constitution, which is the most brilliant document written in mankind’s history.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
