Letter: An 8 a.m. start time would work better

Reading last week's Barrington Times I would like to get some more information on the true start and stop time presentation.

As for reading Mr. O’Brien's letter, it states that the committee has been talking about this for 5 years?

Well, I went back through all the minutes that are posted on the subcommittee reports and that it was brought up in 2011 when the speaker came and presented to the public. Between then and 2014 it was brought up a few more times but no lengthy discussions on the start and stop times, no other public meetings on this.

From what I read in the minutes, the big push was started back in October of 2014, but Mr. O’Brien has posted that at all the meetings that was brought up. Not all people go to the web site to read the reports or find out the next meetings to be posted, not all people are computer savvy.

Since then I myself have been to numerous meetings about this but not the health and wellness meetings because they are when I work. And I never see when the meetings are posted in the Times. It took a phone call to find out how to find the health and wellness committee’s web page.

I have voiced my concern many times but the school committee will not answer questions when they're in a meeting. For some reason, the health and wellness committee seems to be trying to get this pushed through without looking at the big picture.

In my eyes, I can see change in the future but not as drastic as starting at 8:30 a.m. for the high school and middle schools. Maybe we should look at 8 a.m., so the kids can keep their jobs, play sports and attend after school activities.

I hear everyone stand up and speak at the school committee meetings that we moved to the town hall, because of the education that our children will get. Most of you have moved here well over five years ago. Before this plan was brought up, you all knew our start time was at 7:40. Maybe if you were in favor of a later start time you should have looked in other places where the start and stop time is at 8:30 or 9.

I think the community could live with 8 a.m. start time. This new change is giving a headache for certain people, with the school committee adding more things to the plate of the officials trying to work with other communities to set up schedules in such a short time.

The best thing to do would be to look at all the options over the next year and come to a better decision.

Maybe we should look into building the middle school on the same campus as the high school and we they can all take the same bus?
