Letter: Barrington Fire and Rescue Squad saved my life

What services do we all receive from the town for our tax dollars?

Many of us purchased a house and moved here because of the reputation of the school system. Yes, we have the very best teachers and public school system in all of Rhode Island. When your children graduate from high school they will be prepared to succeed.

I would like to also bring to your attention another group of town employees: The Barrington Fire and Rescue Squad. I recently had a need for their service due to a very serious medical emergency. The speed and efficiency of the rescue squad in getting me quickly to the hospital did indeed save my life.

How efficient were they and the hospital staff in addressing my emergency? By the time my entire family got to the hospital (approximately 25 minutes) I was in and out of surgery and was in the process of going to my hospital room.

A day and a half later, I was released and returned home with no complications.

To this day, I have no idea the names of any of the members of the Barrington Rescue Squad that responded to my medical need.

To the Barrington Taxpayers we are fortunate to have such a very professional and dedicated workforce. Please join me in thanking them for their professionalism and service that they provide to all of us.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
