Letter: Brewer Sakonnet Marina honors late Jay Burns

To the editor:

This past sunny Saturday afternoon, the new administration building at Brewer Sakonnet Marina was dedicated in memory to its longtime general manager, Jay Burns. Sadly, Jay passed away six years ago at the young age of 51 from a sudden stroke.

Originally from Mamaroneck, N.Y., Jay spent his entire 32-year career with the Brewer organization. Working the docks in the summers while in college, upon graduation he became the youngest general manager ever appointed. The Brewer family had great faith in him.

During his tenure he oversaw the acquisition of the former Lighthouse Marina to the south of the existing 189-slip north yard. The additional 125 slips made it one of the largest marinas on Aquidneck Island.

He oversaw the many upgrades including the north yard pool, south yard pavilion and the new building that was on the drawing board at the time of his passing. The building named in his honor houses two yacht brokerage firms, laundry facilities, restrooms, a ships store, inside boat storage and administrative offices.

Many old friends and customers joined his children Brandon, McKenzie, Caleb and Skylar to celebrate his life and share the many comical stories that Jay provided.
