To the editor:
I write in support of the proposed Tiverton casino and I do so as a long-time resident of Tiverton and a former legislator representing the town.
Your readers should also know that I reside in Country View Estates, which is one of the neighborhoods closest to the proposed casino. I initially watched with some degree of apprehension as plans unfolded which quickly turned to relief as I attended forums and meetings and saw first-hand how Twin River management sought to integrate the casino into the existing Tiverton landscape.
The design plans were inspired by the Tiverton Library and developed after dozens of resident meetings with nearly 1,500 local attendees. The property has been designed to embrace the local environment – not compete with it. The casino-hotel will be built so it cannot be seen from Route 24 and there will be no neon signs at either the casino entrance, or on Route 24.
And of course, I appreciate Twin River’s commitment to see to fruition the long-awaited planned roundabout near its entrance – something residents have asked for repeatedly over the years. The roundabout will be built where William S. Canning Boulevard meets Stafford Road and Hurst Lane. This will improve current traffic conditions and minimize any new casino-related traffic.
I’m asking Tiverton voters to join me in supporting Question 1 on the statewide and Tiverton ballots this November 8. I also want to remind Tiverton residents to vote twice to support the Twin River Tiverton proposal on the ballot – once in favor of the statewide referendum and once in favor of the Tiverton referendum.
