To the editor:
So, start time for schools will be set at a later hour for the beginning of the educational day for Barrington students. But this requires before and after school child care programs. Well, wouldn’t that require that the students be up and ready at an earlier time anyway?
And because most parents have to go to work to support their family’s financial needs, how will this work for them? Who is this going to work for?
I just read an article about children and too much screen time. The article said that children not only spend too much time watching television but also are given too much screen time on their electronic devices, some from the early age of two.
The conclusion of the article said that it is felt that this happens because adults need time to be able to take care of their responsibilities and have some time for themselves in their increasingly long days. Because of so many hours of screen time many children have a harder time getting a good start to their day, among other things.
So with a change in start time, it would seem that children would have to get to school at the same time anyway for school daycare and be there longer for after school care although, maybe I am not seeing the whole picture.
The problem may not be school start time. It might be in other aspects of our everyday life.
Changing school start time will not be a fix for modern problems brought on by modern technology and family schedules.
And some changes like this have repercussions for the whole community in many ways.
Thank you Cindy for your letter to the editor in last week’s issue of the Barrington Times. You are so right, “The Price of Liberty is Vigilance” as it references many issues in life. And it does so in everything you mentioned.
