To the editor:
I am humbled by the overwhelming support of my position against tolls and I am grateful for the endorsement of a leader in the anti-toll movement: the Portsmouth Concerned Citizens. Voters have a clear choice on the toll issue: Pagliarini is a vote for no tolls; Seveney is a vote for tolling trucks
As StopTollsRI says, “Trucks Today, Cars Tomorrow.” Mr. Seveney’s position of supporting the governor’s plan to toll Interstate Commerce Trucks appears to violate the Dormant Commerce Clause of the United States Constitution: In that the tolls, as proposed, would unduly burden interstate commerce.
Litigation will follow the imposition of toll leading to either the tolls being removed (and leaving us with the bonds), or all vehicles, including our cars, will be tolled. Additionally, my opponent has no answer as to what we are to do if bonds are secured and then the revenue does not meet projections because trucks avoided our state entirely.
A month ago I questioned why the old Sakonnet River Bridge and the gantry still stand. Since then, others are following my lead. We need to keep pressure on the governor and RIDOT to remove the old bridge and the gantry.
I will vote against any bill containing tolls. I will vote against the 2016-2017 budget if tolls are included. If you also oppose tolls, please vote Pagliarini on January 5 so that your position is heard: No tolls!
John A. Pagliarini, Jr. Esq.

Republican candidate for Senate District 11
