Letter: Citizen Fire Academy gives unique look inside department

To the editor:

Unless we require their services, most of us rarely pause to consider the sacrifices made by our local first responders. This is especially true of Bristol's volunteer firefighters and rescue personnel, who are available on a moment's notice, regardless of personal obligations, to assist others in need, even if it requires those responding to put their own safety at risk.

The Bristol Fire Department recently offered Bristol residents an insider's look at the Department's equipment and procedures. Seven of us took advantage of this opportunity, attending the inaugural nine-week Citizens Fire Academy.

Several of us already had some understanding of the workings of the Bristol Fire Department through friends and family. Nonetheless, after graduating from the program, we all have a newfound respect for the extraordinary amount of training and on-the-job physical effort required of our firefighters and rescue personnel. Their commitment to honing their skills and serving those in crisis is nothing short of remarkable.

Our nine-week program covered a wide range of topics and involved classroom presentations, CPR certification, and live demonstrations, including the "jaws of life," a thorough review of the Department's equipment, and a brief stint in the Burn Trailer.

On behalf of our entire class, we extend our thanks to Chief Michael DeMello for allowing us to participate in this unique program, to Battalion Chief James Vieira for organizing our class schedule and presentations, and to all the men and women of the Bristol Fire Department for the extraordinary service they provide to the citizens of Bristol.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
