Letter: Clothing bins allowed in Tiverton but only at landfill

To the editor:

I am writing this letter to correct an error in the February 28 edition of the Sakonnet Times in the article: “Dumping puts a dent on Planet Aid work her.”

That article erroneously states, “ … Tiverton (a town that does not allow the clothing donation bins) …” In fact, clothing donation bins are allowed in the town of Tiverton, but they are restricted to a small paved area just inside the gate to the town landfill. At that location there are presently eight such bins (one for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, one for Planet Aid, three for the Salvation Army, one for Recycling Associates and two for used book donations).

Prior to their relocation to the landfill site, donation bins were found throughout the town and, as noted in the article, they were unfortunately used as dumping sites for all kinds of materials and trash.

All of the extraneous material and trash left outside the bins created a litter problem which was resolved when the Town Council decided to restrict the number and location of the donation bins.

Organizations interested in locating a donation bin in Tiverton can contact the town’s Public Works Department to inquire about placing one or more such bins at the landfill site.
