Letter: Consider donating to save Little Creek Preserve

To the editor:

A golden opportunity has presented itself in the form of a significant 15.6-acre property for sale on Bramans Lane in Portsmouth.

Little Creek Preserve was once part of a thriving 75-acres dairy farm. Today, it is an unspoiled wilderness, subject to strong development pressures. The headwaters of Little Creek, which flows three miles southward to the Sakonnet River, and a seasonal pond, wetlands and natural spring, all contribute to a rich variety of avian and amphibian life.

Aquidneck Land Trust (ALT) is raising $368,000 to permanently conserve this property and make it publicly accessible to all. Little Creek abuts the Sakonnet Greenway Trail, a 10-mile nature path that is a popular recreational asset for walkers, runners, horseback-riders, bird-watchers and dog-walkers. Once conserved, the trail can be expanded, allowing walkers to enjoy a scenic trailside park. Protecting this property will increase the area of wildlife habitat, protect key water assets and preserve and rural view-scape that we cherish.

I ask all of my island friends and neighbors to consider a tax-deductible donation to ALT to save Little Creek Preserve. Since July, over $154,000 has been contributed to this campaign, which must be completed by May 1, 2018. The very character of our island depends on our ability to conserve its irreplaceable natural assets. A generous donor has offered to double every gift made to Little Creek, until the next $20,000 is raised. Every gift can — and does — make a difference.
