Letter: Consider voting for these 3 for Portsmouth water board

Posted

To the editor:

On June 13, 2018 voters of the Portsmouth Water and Fire District (PWFD) will be asked to vote for tax collector (one position) and tax assessor (two positions). Poll hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the District office, 1944 East Main Road, Portsmouth.

This year’s election is particularly critical because recent rumors, rumblings, and mumblings point to an attempt to push PWFD to take over the 75-year-old Navy water system at Melville. This system has had difficulty meeting standards and in short was designed and constructed to World War II needs and standards.

This attempt clearly resembles the pro-development forces attempt to force the installation of sewers in Island Park, Common Fence Point and Portsmouth Park. In that case the initial red herring was pollution. In fact, the waters met shellfish standards and still do. It was all about development on the financial backs of the residents of that part of town. The price tag was $140 million in 2007 dollars plus interest, plus operating costs, plus hookup charges for each resident.

Given this situation and the ongoing needs of the District (particularly the new pump station), it is imperative that we elect people who are known for their critical analytical thinking skills. Three people who meet this criteria and are also known for their calm, measured, dispassionate approach to problems are Fred Faerber, running for tax collector (one position); and Theodore (Ted) Czech and David Gleason, running for tax assessor (two positions).

Please consider voting for these candidates. Each has a track record of extensive public service and is known for not being beholden to any special interest group.
