Letter: Deadline to comment on Gooding Ave hotel is soon

Posted

To the editor:

I am writing to give everyone a heads up that January 8 is the deadline to submit comments to the RI Department of the Environmental Management regarding Wetland Application #22-0264/Mainstay/Sleep Inn Hotel on Gooding Avenue.

The proposed hotel development would displace 50,000 square feet of wetlands. So, if you are concerned about flooding due to wetland destruction, please let your voice be heard. Cement does not absorb water, and storms are getting more severe.

The DEM contact is Martin Wencek, Program Supervisor, Office of Water Resources, RI DEM, 235 Promenade St., Providence, RI 02908.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
