Letter: Do not undermine the school committee's authority

To the editor:

Let the Barrington School Committee do its job and let us respect each other through the process of change. We democratically elect a school committee to do the in-depth work of research and analysis and make informed decisions about Barrington’s schools.

Delaying the implementation of the decision to adjust school schedules will set a dangerous precedent in our town, will disregard the work done over the past 4-plus years, and will weaken the authority of our school committee and elected officials. This precedent will create an environment where the intimidation and bullying of public officials and other community members may become commonplace, undermining the civil discourse in our town.

The divisive tone and approach in the current situation make it less appealing for moderate candidates to consider running for office in our town in the future while opening the door to bullying tactics becoming a norm.

After the school schedule change is determined we will continue to be neighbors. We will also need a functioning and effective school committee. We will need continue to have confidence that our schools and our school administration will provide a thriving and successful school experience for our students.

May all of us participating in the conversation regarding the school schedule change respect each other’s differences and use this as an opportunity for our children to see their community addressing a challenge with respect, making informed decisions and being able to move beyond our differences once the matter is settled. I am optimistic that ultimately this process can serve to enrich our community and not divide it.
