Letter: Don’t sweat the ‘hoax’ that is climate change

To the editor:

I keep seeing, buried deep in the news, that those fearmongers at NASA continue to claim that each month is the warmest ever and that climate change is accelerating. It’s amazing that scientists still push this nonsense. What have scientists ever done for mankind to make them think we’d believe them? It’s obvious that these elitists, whoever they are, are just trying to make a name for themselves.

Luckily, we have had a steady stream of more rational opinions from non-scientists — some having recently appeared in the Presidential Primary debates.

One scolded NASA to focus on space and ignore our earth and atmosphere. Another declared that laws can’t change the weather. Yet another described those who claim that climate change is man-made as being “really arrogant.” One wants the private sector to deal with it — obviously because they’ve always excelled at grappling with the social and moral issues of mankind. The wisest candidate explained to us that climate change is a big hoax … and he should know.

Unfortunately we could pick only one of these visionaries (the “hoax” guy) to hopefully drive us blazing into the future — fortunately, he will be well-supported: A senator once assured us that God wouldn’t let us destroy our own planet. Another explained that we shouldn’t try to control what God is doing with the climate. A representative accused NOAA of conspiring to falsify global warming data. So in summary, God won’t let us destroy our planet because he wants to do it himself, meanwhile, scientists cash in on God’s handiwork — works for me.

We also have other, more powerful forces on our side, such as the dedicated “old money” that, after President Nixon created the EPA, established their tax-free (fist bump!) foundations that create and then fund “think tanks” that tell us what to think, who to believe and who not to trust. Their well-funded lobbyists persuade state and federal legislators to twist climate change into a myth that wastes taxes, reduces corporate profits, threatens the well-controlled and manipulated free market and, of course, takes your job and freedoms away. Their clever pundits reframe climate change from a moral issue to a Left vs. Right issue, letting it fester in a pile with all the other partisan issues — genius.

Hopefully we can continue to vilify NASA, NOAA, the National Science Foundation and scientists in general as they weave mounting verifiable data into their lie, convincing more and more Americans. Of course, if we can’t debunk the preponderance of climate change data then we can just cherry-pick from it to create doubt. If agenda-driven cherry-picking of data got us into the Iraq war then surely it can get us to ignore a hoax.

All that data though … sometimes I wish I could be convinced. If only the same data would be embraced by those whom I have been surreptitiously conditioned to believe ...

Oh well, if needed, we’ll just build a big beautiful vented dome over America. Our children will pay for it — trust me.
