Letter: Eternally thankful for Fourth committee’s commitment, dedication

To the editor:

Like most Bristolians, I love to boast that I have not missed a Parade in my entire life. Regardless of my location around the globe, I always made it to Bristol for July 4. What I did not realize over those decades is how much went into the celebration I took for granted. The concerts, carnival and fireworks were staples of my youth and adulthood. They are events that "occurred." Some "committee" made it happen.

This year, I had the opportunity to experience the machinations of the Bristol July 4 celebration up close. I saw the precision and efficiency of volunteers. I saw the selfless dedication not exhibited by full-time, paid employees in corporate America, but that of Bristolians wanting to enhance our lives and community.

Cynically, one could say said volunteers "...had the time to volunteer,” but these dedicated individuals have jobs — real jobs with deadlines and performance appraisals. Their efforts come from dedication to community as they have no clue as to whom they will serve year over year. They serve Bristol, its history and its future.

Whenever you mention specific people, you risk offending other hard-working volunteers. My goal is to offend no one. I am fully cognizant of the efforts of dozens of Fourth of July Committee members. I know those "facing the community" rely on those serving the community.

In that regard, I must recognize Donna Falcoa and her team. As "Chair,” Donna oversees all July Fourth events, as she is intimate with every detail her most competent committee executes. Pat and Nat Squatrito are Bristol treasures. Having not had exposure to these two, I remain in awe of their dedication, their talent in photography, and Pat's warmth, efficiency and love surrounding the "Miss Fourth of July" Pageant. Many believe the girls trying out are confident, but many are not and need Pat's assistance, and she is the voice each girl hears as they participate and hope for victory.

The Fourth of July is a series of major events. We are fortunate to have a dedicated team of most competent volunteers, and for that and what you procure, I am infinitely thankful.

Parades past are etched in my memory; parades future are of my excitement; this parade was my favorite for its beautiful "Little Miss" (...which does NOT delineate from our eternal thanks to those mentioned above). My daughter would not be where she is not only with our influence, but also that of the Committee and her Court.
