Letter: Faith and science — Giving faith its fair due

To the editor:

The relationship between faith and science has been a complicated and controversial subject for almost 200 years.  Evolution, Big Bang, Creation and Intelligent Design are the main topics, and few people are neutral about them.

Some attempts have been made to reduce the friction between the two, but these attempts lead to conclusions that many find unsatisfactory.

This has been an area of interest for me for many years, mainly because I see two issues of concern:

1. Most people have a limited understanding of the topic and don’t always grasp the implications.

2. The foundational tenets of Christianity are often compromised in order to

achieve a reconciliation.

In an effort to address this situation, I am inviting neighboring churches and community members to a presentation at the First Baptist “Old Stone’ Church in Tiverton on Sunday, February 10, at 3 p.m., to be held in our fellowship hall at 7 Old Stone Church Road in Tiverton.

The presentation will explore …

• The different attempts to reconcile faith and science.

• Some of the major weaknesses in the Theory of Evolution.

• Ways that the Bible has been ahead of science or has concurred with science.

• Ways of reconciling the six days of creation with the 13.7 billion year-old age of the universe held by science.

I am hoping that you will join us for this presentation. It is free and open to the public.

Light refreshments will be available, also free of charge.

If you have any questions, please call the church office at 401-624-4155.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
