To the editor,

On behalf of the families of Colt Andrews School, we would like express our thanks to the town of Bristol and the public servants who helped establish a School Zone with the installation of two flashing lights on Hope Street: Town Council member Nathan Calouro, Town Administrator Tony Teixeira, Chief of Police Josue D. Canario, Director of Planning and Development Diane Williamson and Town Planner Ed Tanner. 

We would like to give special recognition of appreciation to Capt. Brian Burke of the BPD who spearheaded the project and coordinated with the Department of Transportation and State Traffic Commission and numerous agencies including National Grid, State Scenic Roadway Board, and RIDOT. Capt. Burke’s herculean efforts to complete the project this early in the academic year means so very much to our school community.

Given the loss of many downtown crosswalks coupled with the reality of today’s distracted drivers — i.e. cell phones and texting — it is more imperative than ever that our town be proactive to provide a safe downtown for pedestrians and particularly for our young walkers, crossing guards, elders and those with disabilities. We are grateful for our community’s support and encourage all drivers to pay attention and slow down.
