Letter: For Tiverton Library’s sake, please support Budget #2

To the editor:

Tiverton voters, please vote for Budget 2 and help Tiverton Library expand hours for the entire community! As part of the long-range planning process conducted by the library’s Board of Trustees last year, we surveyed the community and conducted focus groups. What we heard over and over again was that Tiverton residents wanted the library to be open more hours and in particular, wanted us to bring back Tuesday morning hours at the main library and Saturday hours at Union Library. Passage of Budget 2 will provide the funding necessary to make those expanded hours a reality.

While Budget 1 does provide an increase in library funding over last year’s level, it is only enough to cover an unexpected increase in retirement-related expenses, leaving the library essentially level funded. Budget 2 provides enough to cover those expenses and will allow us to provide the extra hours residents have been asking for.

Budget 2 also invests in town infrastructure and our schools and lowers your taxes. Due to large increases in several non-property tax revenue sources this year - including from the casino - we can invest in our town and enjoy some tax relief at the same time. Vote for Budget 2 and help turn the tide for Tiverton.

This letter represents my personal views and has not been approved by the full Board of Trustees.
