Letter: Forever grateful for our public schools

To the editor:

As a mom, I have learned a wonderful skill over the years as I have raised my two boys! Look busy, but listen intently to their conversations. (I am usually cooking while eavesdropping because we all know how much boys eat!) They are now in college, a junior and a freshman, but I am still using my craft to stay informed about the new adventures in their lives.

Over the Easter weekend, they were sitting together (eating!), and comparing stories of their professors, 8 a.m. classes, having to do their own laundry, cafeteria food, etc.

The conversation turned from a tone of complaining to one of gratitude at how they were “way more prepared for the demands of college than the other kids in their classes." The discussion continued for quite some time. They went back and forth in conversation, highlighting all of the wonderful memories made throughout the 12 years in school here in Barrington, from favorite elementary school activities to how much they learned in AP classes as the high school.

As a teacher in Barrington, I am fortunate enough to witness the depth of teaching and learning happening each and every day in our schools. The thoughts and memories shared between my boys just further affirmed everything I already know.

I am continually inspired by the level of caring and commitment by our whole school community, working together to make make our district the unique place that it is!

I will forever be grateful to each and every teacher, support staff, administrator and school committee member who worked together tirelessly, providing my boys with everything they needed to be the amazing young men they have become!

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
