Letter: Gala to benefit military suicide prevention

To the editor:

In 2015, 475 active-duty military service members, National Guard members and reservists lost their battle with traumatic brain injury, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder and took their own lives out of hopelessness and desperation.

Our son, Sgt. Matthew Scott Patton, was a casualty of these physical and psychological wounds of war May 13, 2013. As a result, we founded the Matthew Patton Foundation on March 26, 2015 (his birthday) to honor his memory and to fulfill our mission to solve mental health issues identified by active-duty service members, veterans, and their families to better serve their needs.

MPF is dedicated to providing education and advocacy through multiple platforms using a public health model to help our Armed Forces, veterans, and their families achieve their best mental health states, end stigma and stop military suicide.

The Matthew Patton Foundation is having its first benefit gala on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at the Bristol Oyster Bar on Hope Street between 5:30 and 10 p.m. Your $25 donation comes with one of three options: A dozen raw oysters fresh from the bay, a locally-sourced vegetable appetizer or a cocktail of your choice. The kitchen and bar will remain open throughout the evening for those who wish to indulge themselves further with selections from a hand-crafted menu of delicious delicacies. We will have a silent auction featuring a variety of items.

We hope to see you there. If you are unable to attend the event, you may still make a contribution to the Foundation at www.matthewpattonfoundation.org or by mail at PO Box 797, Bristol RI 02809.

They fought for us; now it is time for us to fight for them.

He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
