Letter: Library gala a success; dedication awaits

To the editor:

A broad cross-section of the community came together recently for a festive evening at the new Tiverton Public Library.

The guests imagined a by-gone era, with a Downton Abbey theme and antique car display, while they simultaneously glimpsed the future in the light-filled, spacious, new facility where books and digital media will share the spotlight.

Three hundred attendees were treated to a live jazz quartet, delicious desserts prepared by Tiverton High School Culinary Arts students, and tasty appetizers. Tiverton After School Arts students dressed in costumes as Downton Abbey servants to greet and serve the guests.

The Library Foundation proudly sponsored the evening. Proceeds will benefit the library and provide enhancements such as additional technology.

I wish to thank co-chairs Brenda Nagle and Kerry Kennedy and the 30 volunteers whose creativity and hard work made the evening so successful. My thanks to the auction committee and generous bidders whose participation resulted in the lively sale of over 50 donated items, ranging from a collectible doll to a baseball autographed by Brock Holt, from premier seats at PC Basketball games to original art and jewelry, from tickets for museum tours to a lobster feast, and from pairings of commemorative bottles of wine with restaurant gift cards to a stay at a Jamestown inn.

I am also grateful to Compton Clambakes, Colonial Beer of North Dartmouth, Wine Treasury Estates, Granny Squibb Iced Tea, Tiverton Dunkin Donuts, All Friends Catering & BBQ of Westport, Pranzi of Providence, Fall River Subway and Tom’s Market for their generous donations.

Finally, thanks again to all who have taken the vision of a new Library and made it into the reality of a vibrant community center.  Although the space is new, our wonderful staff will be familiar. Please come and “check out” Tiverton’s new library at the dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 13 at 10 a.m.
