To the editor:
As senior homeowners, living in our home for 42 years, our concerns about the senior tax exemption are many. The proposed changes to the exemption don't seem to be well thought out and do nothing to solve the ever increasing, real estate tax rate. The exemption is a paltry amount. When comparing the costs to the town of a family with school aged children, with costs to the town by its senior residents, there appears to be a disconnect.
The appropriations committee and town council need to scrutinize carefully the school and municipal budgets. Our concerns extend to the ability of the appropriations committee to reign in school spending. One of its members is the spouse of a school committee member — could there be a conflict of interest?
We all strive to live within our means, it is time the town does. The solution does not reside in the budgets of seniors but resides in the town's budget! All Barrington taxpayers would benefit from containment of the onerous raises in the tax rate.
