I am a relative newcomer to Warren, having lived here for only 44 years, while Chris was born and raised in this wonderful little town. The politically progressive vibe mixes well with the pragmatic; the community feel and creative spirit blends nicely with the desire to improve every aspect of the town.

Like most citizens, we want to live in a place where our political representatives reflect our values. This includes support for schools where children learn their country's history — both the good and the bad. We want to see common sense gun control; honest and transparent government; a woman's right to decide her own reproductive health; affordable housing; and an understanding that we have only one planet that needs protection as we would safeguard a vulnerable child.

We are proud to have nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren and want them to live in a world where social justice and human rights continue to represent the legacy of a great nation.

Like Rep. Jason Knight, I am a U.S. Navy veteran, having served four years during the Vietnam era. We have followed Rep. Knight's legislative accomplishments closely, from protecting children and elders from abuse to securing a woman's right to reproductive health care. As a frequent user of the East Bay Bike Path, we particularly appreciate his efforts to see the bridges rebuilt so that detours are no longer necessary. It has taken way too long for this valuable resource to be made whole again.

Voting is a precious right that many people have suffered greatly to achieve. Regardless of how you vote, we hope to see you at the polls in November.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
