With the discussion of a casino for Tiverton underway, I urge the public to hear Robert Steele at the new Tiverton Library next Monday, Sept. 21, at 6:30 pm. His popular book, "The Curse: Big-Time Gambling's Seduction of a Small New England Town,” was written in 2012 and has recently gone into a second printing. We need information from various viewpoints to make informed decisions.
The novel is set against the explosion of casino gambling that hit Connecticut during the 1990s, and the author has kept updated on the current state of casinos in the northeastern states, including Rhode Island.
Robert Steele is chairman of Connecticut-based NLC Mutual Insurance Company and has been a director of numerous other companies, including the American Stock Exchange. A graduate of Amherst College and Columbia University, he served in the CIA and Congress (2nd District, Conn.) and was a nominee for governor of Connecticut.
