Letter: Revived Tiverton GOP has hardly been ‘hijacked

To the editor:

Mr. Guimond could not be more misinformed (Letter to the editor Oct 25) regarding the Tiverton Republican Town Committee (TRTC). If any “hijacking” took place, it was the TRTC recruiting TTA members as we have common values, and belief in the TRTC mission statement.

Since my husband Richard and I joined the TRTC and became officers 2.5 years ago, the by-laws have been revised, the mission statement has been implemented, membership has increased from 9 to 23, and funds have an 8x increase.

Tiverton Republican voters that have a strong history of voting received one mailed newsletter from the TRTC. The rating chart for all 18 Town Council candidates is based upon our mission statement and observation during time candidates served as elected officials on the Town Council, Budget Committee, Charter Review Commission and members of committees and boards. Candidates that have not served, but have spoken publicly supporting higher budgets and increased signature counts that make a petitioner’s budget more difficult, received a low rating while others received the highest rating for respect. Some Town Council candidates have a neutral rating because there is no data to support a position one way or the other.

It is unfortunate that information regarding candidates “insulted” Mr. Guimond, but there are now hundreds of Tiverton Republicans that are better informed about the way the Tiverton town councilors have conducted themselves, regardless of councilor’s party affiliation.

Our mission statement “encourages lively debate”- I invite all Republicans to attend monthly meetings and participate. I would like to extend a special invitation to Mr. Guimond so that he can familiarize himself with the TRTC, and in the future, he can criticize with accurate information.

Our meetings are posted on Facebook: Tiverton, Rhode Island Republicans, or email: GOPTiverton@cox.net
