Letter: RWU students go beyond service for historical society

Posted

To the editor,

On behalf of the Board of the Bristol Historical and Preservation Society, I am writing to express my heartfelt thanks to the 24 Roger Williams University students who helped us organize and prepare the architectural materials from Lombard Pozzi’s collection for sale. These kids were amazing. All were hard workers, all willingly got covered with decades-old dust, and all had smiles on their faces the entire time.

Mohammed and Jack helped me move a huge stack of 12-foot boards through a 3 foot by 2 foot attic hatch. When finished, we emerged to find that Andrew and three of his buddies had cleared out the basement; Sabrina, Miranda and two of their friends had cleared out the shed; and Abby and Kelly had meticulously organized everything into piles, rows and stacks for our future customers. The garage was cleared out so fast, I barely had time to blink. I only wish I could remember more names. Each of these kids was amazing and deserves a shout-out.

To say that these students performed a service is putting it mildly. This task, one we have been struggling to accomplish for two years, was way beyond us. These kids knocked it out in a morning. We are grateful to them for their help; they are an asset to our community and we are lucky to have them. Welcome, RWU class of 2020!

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
