To the editor:
Thank you for your editorial in last week's Sakonnet Times supporting the No Guns In Schools resolution, in response to the Little Compton Town Council's vote against it. As you may know, the Town Council reconsidered and reversed their vote at their meeting last Thursday, May 5. This time the vote was 3-2 in favor of No Guns In Schools.
Town Councilor Charles Appleton introduced the reconsideration. Since the council's decision, Mr. Appleton educated himself, pursuing the issue with our Chief of Police, Buzzy Marion, resulting in a change of heart. He got major pushback from councilors who want guns in schools, and he stood his ground.
I commend Councilor Appleton for his openness to learning and his willingness to change his mind based on that learning. This, to me and I think to many, means he is a very dedicated public servant who takes his role, and his obligation to know the facts, very seriously.
We need more Chuck Appleton's at every level of government.
