Letter: Solution: Build a new bridge over the old one

Posted

There has been much discussion about the Silver Creek bridge. I had a suggestion which I gave to the DOT but have not gotten a response.

As mentioned in a piece a week ago, the bridge should be at least twice the length to allow for drainage. It should be two feet higher than it is now.

Solution: The area could be dredged to allow a barge to get close to the old bridge. A pre-constructed bridge, like the IWAY in Providence, and two ramps could be dropped over the existing bridge. This could be done in a matter of days. The old bridge could be removed from underneath and utilities replaced. The only issue would be with the “historical” stone work, which tends to be a problem with progress in Bristol.
