Letter: Special event raises money for CAMFED

To the editor:

This past Friday night, March 15, Barrington High School's Gender Equality & Awareness Club held its second annual Mixed Media Feminist Showcase to celebrate Women's History Month.

The theme of "empowerment" was well represented by students, staff and alumni through their art, stories, poetry and music. The goal of the evening was to raise money for The Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED) which provides educational opportunities to girls in Africa. We raised $293.16 which will allow one girl to attend a full year of high school.

This never would have been possible without the generosity of the following local businesses: Barrington Books, Billy's and Moe's Southwestern Grill. We also appreciate the support of the following BHS groups: the math department, Stage Masters, The Revue and the classes of 2019 and 2020. Of course the event wouldn't have been possible without the support of The Friends of Bay Spring Community Center especially Mr. Stephen Venuti.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
