Letter: Standing watch over sacred grounds

Posted

To the editor:

These are but a few of the many souls — named and unnamed — whom we honor reverently in well-kept cemeteries across our small New England town of Barrington.

General John A. Logan, regarded as the most important figure in the movement to recognize Memorial Day, called on his fraternal organization the Grand Army of the Republic and the entire nation to “…cherish tenderly the memory of our heroic dead, who made their breasts a barricade between our country and its foes..."

The Barrington Cemetery Commission has since its establishment in Jan. 1909, worked without end (and without taxpayer dollars) to honor the memory of our war dead; our military veterans; and residents from every background who are laid to rest in the six pastoral cemeteries under our care throughout town.

As one of three commissioners, I speak for the body when I write that it is a distinct honor to be tasked with the oversight of our sacred grounds and to stand watch over each of our citizens who rest here in hallowed peace.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
