Letter: Strike up the band for Glen Manor House (photos)

To the editor,

Last night (July 7) I and over 300 local residents had the opportunity to enjoy the oldest and one of the best bands in America. The American Band concert at the Glen Manor House featured music of great composers, from John Phillips Souza  and Tchaikovsky to Gershwin.

As always, the grounds of the Manor House where we sat and enjoyed a picnic supper were beautifully manicured by Don Wilkinson, who with his charming wife, Katie, are resident managers of the property.

This free concert and several other events (Holiday Open House, Mistletoe Madness) are sponsored by the Friends of Glen Manor House, whose mission is to support the preservation of the property for the enjoyment of the citizens of Portsmouth.

The resident managers oversee the upkeep and rental of the property for social events, typically three events per weekend from April through October with sales over $500,000 per year. It’s a win-win situation for the town and its residents.
