Letter: Ten reasons to vote for the school feasibility study

Posted

To the editor:

1. The strength of our democracy depends on public schools and the students they develop.

2. We, the people of Westport, whether we have children in the public schools or not, have the responsibility as citizens to provide that education.

3. The school buildings in Westport, especially the middle school building, have serious problems that need urgent attention.

4. A feasibility study is the smart way to determine our immediate and long-term school building needs and to come up with solutions that are affordable, sustainable, and efficient.

5  A thorough feasibility study following their guidelines is required by the Massachusetts School Building Authority as a condition for their help with funding of projects.

6. Because Westport has been accepted into the eligibility period, the state will reimburse the town for 47% of the feasibility study and 47% of any resulting project.

7. In the long run a feasibility study saves money.

8. If we do not go ahead with a study, we risk being dropped from the state's eligibility list.

9. Good public schools bring us together and make our nation stronger.

10. Schools that educate our young citizens in a healthy, safe, and up-to-date learning environment mean a better future for all of us.

Voting and supporting public education are two of our most important responsibilities as citizens. Please attend the May 5 Town Meeting and vote for the proposed feasibility study.
