Letter: Time to get tough on disobedient students

Kudos to Pete Hewett for his May 9 letter, “Parents should be held accountable for students’ actions.” We pick them up, drive them to school, feed them two meals and babysit them after school. Are the parents responsible for nothing? Shall we pick them up as soon as they are born and return them to their parents at age 18?

I agree with Pete when he says it is high time parents take responsibility for their children’s behavior. If a child is disruptive to the point where he/she prevents 20 others in their class from learning, it’s time to call the parents. Tell them their child has been disruptive and was placed in a “safe” room (empty room with pads on the floor to sit on so the students can’t hurt him/herself or others).

Let the parents know, working or not, that they have one hour to remove the child. After that, the child will be placed in protective seclusion at either the Boys/Girls training school or local police station until the parent is available.

After one or two calls, most parents will have figured out how to control their child. If not, after the third disruption, the student is transferred to classes at the training school until such time as the parent can ensure obedience.

Or we could follow ancient Hebrew law: “A disrespectful child shall be hung.” Seems a tad drastic, but it probably wouldn’t take more than one or two to clear up the situation.
