Letter: Town's voting process needs to be changed

Posted

To the editor:

I have been asked why am I running for the open seat on the Barrington Town Council.

One reason is that I have been disappointed, as have other members of the community, with attempts to change the voting process for the town’s budget have failed. The current process limits the voting opportunities for many registered voters.

There were opportunities to explore change when a commission was formed to review the Town Charter, and a hearing was held by the council to explore ways for initiating change. Both opportunities failed to receive support.

Barrington voters, like myself, have expressed frustration with the process due to factors that limit our ability to vote due to family and work commitments at the time of the annual meeting. Some seniors are not able to venture out at night, and others voter have just given up because of frustration.

In the past, I voiced my concern for change by attending the hearing held by the council regarding the antiquated voting process that was held by the council, and I had written to the president of the town council regarding my concern over the limited numbers of voters who cast their vote at the annual meeting.

I have other concerns over what has transpired in our town, although I do not know all the facts behind the decision not to recommend change, I do believe at this time that it is important to have further review with hopes for a possible change.

On Tuesday, Feb. 5, all voters have an opportunity to explore a change. I am hopeful that voters will come out of their comfort zone and give my concerns as well as concerns of other voters the opportunity to seek change.  As a candidate for this seat, I appreciate your support.

Please write me in.

Thank you,

John Taylor

Barrington

Mr. Taylor is running as a write-in candidate in the town council special election on Feb. 5.
