To the editor:
Westport is currently facing a number of serious problems in areas that fall under the jurisdiction of the Board of Health. These include unhealthy water supplies in several areas, excess nitrogen that is a threat to the health of the Westport River, and several new housing projects whose water and wastewater systems require careful evaluation.
Fortunately, there is a candidate for the open position on the Board of Health who is eminently qualified to help address these problems, namely Phil Weinberg. Phil has recently retired from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection where he was employed for three decades, his last position being as head of the Southeast Regional Office in Lakeville. He knows the laws and procedures and is familiar with many of our problems, having had to review applications and appeals that were submitted to the regional office for review.
We strongly support Phil Weinberg’s candidacy for the Board of Health as we know that he is not only well prepared for this position, but is also personable, thoughtful and considerate in his dealings with people. He will bring these very useful qualities to this important town board.
