Letter: Westport school money is already earmarked

Posted

Petitioners are asking the town to purchase Westport Camping Grounds, 346 Old County Road, for the benefit of the new school complex. Even though no dollar amount was printed on the Feb. 27 referendum ballot, a location for the project was identified as 400 Old County Road.

Proposed athletic fields and tennis courts are components of that site approved by Westport voters. They authorized the Town to borrow $96.8 million on Jan. 23 for specified costs, which resulted in a debt exclusion of that amount. It’s absurd to ask the Town to negotiate the appraised value and assessment of Westport Camping Grounds “within the costs approved by Westport Town Meeting” as suggested by petitioners. Voters have already earmarked that money.
