To the editor:

I am not opposed to the construction of a new police station here in Westport. No one should have to work in a dilapidated, moldy building. And yet, in casting my vote to enable the town to exempt “the amounts required to pay for the bond issued in order to construct, equip and furnish a police station, including all costs incidental and related thereto,” what exactly am I signing on for? Will it be another extravagantly designed and furnished building like the fire station? Or will this project be more in keeping with the budget and needs of the town?

We have many needs in terms of municipal infrastructure. Our high school and middle school spring to mind, as does our Town Hall and the dire need for a sewer and storm water management system in our northern and more densely populated environs. Let’s face it, we really need to commit to some serious municipal upgrading in this town.

So as I cast my vote for the construction of a new police station, I can only hope that those in charge will be very judicious in what is exempted from our taxes for “all those costs incidental and related” to this new building. I sure hope we can trust you.
