Local Olympian earns spot on national team

Anders Weiss finishes first in men's pair at trials

Barrington's Anders Weiss and Michael Colella of Md., captured top honors in the men's pair event at the 2017 U.S. Senior and Para World Championship Trials on Mercer Lake recently.

With the win, Weiss, who competed in the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil, and Colella have qualified for the 2017 World Rowing Championships, from Sept. 24 to Oct. 1 in Sarasota-Bradenton, Fla.

Weiss and Colella finished in first place in the finals, 2.59 seconds ahead of the field.

The full U.S. National Team roster will be announced by Aug. 28.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
